How I actually study (and stay focused)

People sometimes ask how I balance school with programming, guitar, basketball, and tennis. The honest answer is that I don't have more hours than anyone else. I just try to make the hours I spend studying really count.

1. Plan the week on Sunday

Every Sunday I list what's due, what tests are coming up, and which topics feel shaky. Then I block out study time around practice and matches. Writing it down means I'm never surprised by a deadline.

2. Short, focused sessions

I work in 25–45 minute blocks with short breaks in between. My phone goes in another room. It's amazing how much more I get done in 30 truly focused minutes than in two distracted hours.

Understanding beats memorizing. If I can explain it to a friend, I actually know it.

3. Teach it back

After I learn something new, I try to explain it out loud as if I were teaching it. If I get stuck, that's exactly the part I need to review.

4. Practice problems over re-reading

  • Do problems first, then check notes when stuck.
  • Keep a "mistakes list" and review it before tests.
  • Mix topics together instead of doing one type over and over.

None of this is magic. It's just consistency, the same thing that improves my jump shot or a guitar riff. Show up, focus, repeat.
